On the sand sat a pale shell, open a little, like a sleepy mouth.

A child picked it up with two hands, the way you hold a cup.

Hello, said the child.

The shell did not speak in words. It played the sea instead: hush, hush, hush, and then a farther hush.

The child sat down. The tide came in a step. The tide went out a step.

That is how the ocean rocks itself.

The child put the shell to one ear, then the other, then in a lap.

The lullaby kept going even when nobody was listening very hard.

That is the best kind.

When it was time to go, the child set the shell back, open to the air.

The sea continued its practice, which it has been doing for a long, long time.
