There was a lamp on a little table by the stairs.
It was not a hero lamp. It did not blaze. It made a circle the size of a cat.
At night the house grew tall and quiet. Floors remembered footsteps and then forgot them.
The lamp stayed.
It lit the first stair, and the second, and a bit of the banister where a hand liked to rest.
A parent whispered, we can see enough.
A child whispered, that is plenty.
They went up together, not fast.
At the top, the lamp still glowed, doing its small job for anyone who might come down for water.
Houses sleep better when one kind light keeps watch.
The lamp did not mind being last. It dimmed a little, to be polite to the dark, and that was the whole story.
